Energy saving tips: how to reduce your energy bills and save money.

April 1, 2020

Whether you are working from home or simply self-isolating yourself during this uncertain time, your energy bills are set to go up. It is predicted that an extra £52 million a week will be spent on energy bills by UK households as we stay home. Whilst there are energy saving measures and  upgrades should apply for, such as cavity wall/loft insulation, boiler upgrade to improve your home’s energy efficiency, there are plenty of things you can do today that will save you a pretty penny whilst we’re self-isolating.

Our recommended energy saving tips include:

  • Turn down the thermostat. Setting your thermostat at least one degree lower can reduce energy use by up to 10% or £75 a year!

  • Swap your light bulbs. Replacing your light bulbs to energy efficient LED lights could reduce lighting costs by 70% or up to £35.

  • Unplug electronics that are not in use. Small appliances such as chargers, toasters, laptops, entertainment systems do use energy even when not in use. So switching off the power at the plug, could save you around £60 a year.

  • Switch to eco mode. Setting your dish washer and washing machine to eco friendly energy saving settings can save up to 20% of energy.

  • Switch off the lights. Ensure that you let in as much natural light into your home as possible, that way there’s no need for desk lamps etc. Turn off the light even if you leave the room for a few minutes.

  • Limit your shower time. Spending less time in the shower and using colder water can save you at to £20 a year.

  • Turn off the tap. Don’t let the water run when brushing teeth, washing up etc. For every minute you leave the tap running 6 litters of water is being waste.

Just these simple tweaks that everyone can do could save you quite a bit of money! And whilst you’re making these small changes you should also apply for our energy efficiency grants that will further help you with energy efficiency of your home, lower your energy bills as well as reduce your carbon emissions.
